Issue 294: Behind the cover

Photography beyond the sumps

The addition of photography always adds a layer of complexity to any caving trip. There is the necessity of transporting the delicate, often expensive, kit, coupled with the need to surround yourself with a team who are happy to help with ‘just one more shot’.

Add to this the need to transport both the team and camera gear through sumps and you have suddenly made the task exponentially more difficult. The potential for damaging kit of course increases if great care isn’t taken.

For this reason I would like to thank Mitch Parry and George Linnane who, as well as being tough, strong divers and cavers, are also skilled at knowing what I need from them almost before I do.
